The US EPA identifies gas and particle characteristics, fabric properties, air-to-cloth ratio, pressure drop and cleaning as important baghouse variables. Those variables interact: a higher filtration velocity can raise pressure drop and cleaning demand, while condensation can turn otherwise manageable dust into a blinding deposit.

A seven-step filter media selection method

Step 1: Define the full temperature profile

Do not submit only the average. Include cold starts, normal range, maximum temperature, excursion duration, excursion frequency and possible local hot spots. Keep a design margin to the supplier-approved continuous limit. A short-term rating is not a normal operating temperature.

Step 2: Establish the dew-point margin

Identify water and acid dew points where relevant. Check insulation, cold walls, fresh-air leakage, hopper heating, startup and shutdown sequences. Condensation may cause mud-like cake, bag blinding, high differential pressure and corrosion even when the fibre is described as moisture resistant.

Step 3: Map the complete gas chemistry

List SOx, NOx, HCl, HF, oxygen, alkalis, solvents and process additives as applicable. Concentration, temperature, moisture and exposure time must be reviewed together. Avoid absolute terms such as “chemical proof.”

Step 4: Characterize the dust

Fine dust, sharp particles, sticky material and high inlet loading require different structures. Include particle-size distribution, bulk density, abrasiveness, cohesiveness, oil content and combustible-dust information where applicable.

Step 5: Calculate system load

Air-to-cloth ratio is gas flow divided by active filtration area. Confirm whether gas flow is actual or standard volume and whether offline compartments have been accounted for. Review gas distribution and can velocity as well as the overall ratio.

Step 6: Match the cleaning method

Pulse-jet, reverse-air and shaker systems impose different mechanical loads. Record pulse pressure, duration, sequence and trigger logic. Media that releases dust well may still fail if cleaning is too aggressive, while conservative cleaning may allow residual cake and pressure drop to build.

Step 7: Specify the complete bag

The specification should state fibre blend, scrim, weight, thickness if relevant, surface treatment or membrane, permeability, tensile properties, sewing thread, seam, top and bottom design, dimensions and cage fit. The lowest-risk quotation is rarely the one that names only the fibre.

YuanChen media data for initial screening

The table below reproduces values listed in YuanChen’s current product PDFs. It can offer good mechanical strength and abrasion performance for suitable dry dust applications. It should not be selected from price alone where hot moisture or acid condensation is possible.

YuanChen’s current polyester sheet lists 550 g/m², 120°C continuous and 150°C short-term temperature. A folder name describes one item as antistatic, but the PDF contains no conductive-fibre design, resistance value or test standard; the antistatic claim must therefore be verified separately.

Product reference: polyester filter bags.

Acrylic: evaluate for moderate-temperature moist or acidic duty

Acrylic media may be screened for some moderate-temperature applications where moisture and acidic conditions make standard polyester unattractive. The exact acrylic chemistry and surface construction matter. YuanChen’s current acrylic membrane-media sheet lists 580 g/m², 120°C continuous and 140°C short-term temperature, 2–5 m³/(m²·min) permeability and <0.8 m/min filtration velocity. The source PDF does not provide an application statement, so suitability must come from the actual gas analysis.

Product reference: acrylic filter bags.

PPS: useful within a controlled oxidation and temperature window

PPS is often evaluated for hot, moist and acidic flue gas where its oxidation exposure can be controlled. YuanChen’s pure PPS sheet lists a PPS/PPS construction, 580 g/m², 160°C continuous and 190°C short-term temperature, and 10–15 m³/(m²·min) permeability. The document describes lower-oxygen, lower-sulfur-coal direction but provides no numeric oxygen limit.

Do not copy a generic oxygen percentage into a specification. Review oxygen and oxidizing species with temperature, moisture and time. For a focused comparison, read PPS vs PTFE filter bags and the PPS filter bag product page.

Aramid: higher-temperature capability with moisture constraints

Aramid or meta-aramid is commonly considered for dry, higher-temperature service requiring good abrasion performance. Moisture, acids and alkalis can narrow its useful window, especially at elevated temperature. YuanChen’s current aramid sheet lists 550 g/m², 204°C continuous and 230°C short-term temperature and positions the item toward cement kiln-head service.

Use the generic term “aramid” unless the actual fibre brand is verified. Product reference: aramid filter bags.

P84 and aramid/P84 blends: assess shape, chemistry and verified limits

P84 fibres are used in high-temperature filtration and can support fine-particle capture through their fibre geometry. Blending with aramid or PTFE may target a different balance of temperature, chemistry, mechanical behaviour and cost. The complete blend percentage, scrim and finish should be specified.

YuanChen’s source PDFs list 210/230°C for an aramid+P84/PTFE-scrim item and 260/280°C for a P84/PTFE-scrim item. Because the latter value requires internal technical recheck, it should not be published as a firm design limit until confirmed. Product reference: P84 filter bags.

PTFE: broad resistance, but not an unlimited solution

PTFE is generally screened for severe heat, oxidation, humidity and chemical exposure. YuanChen’s current full PTFE membrane-media sheet lists PTFE fibre and scrim, 800 g/m², 260°C continuous and 280°C short-term temperature, 2–5 m³/(m²·min) permeability and <1.0 m/min filtration velocity.

PTFE’s broader operating window does not eliminate the need to control dew point, cleaning, cage condition or mechanical construction. It must not be described as resistant to every chemical at every concentration and temperature. Product reference: PTFE filter bags.

Fiberglass composite media: high-temperature screening with mechanical care

Fiberglass-based media can be considered for higher-temperature service, but flex abrasion, handling, cleaning and cage support require careful design. YuanChen’s current P84+fiberglass composite sheet lists 850 g/m², 280°C continuous and 300°C short-term temperature, 10–15 m³/(m²·min) permeability and <0.8 m/min filtration velocity. The product sheet directs it toward lower-filtration-velocity cement-kiln applications and describes average abrasion performance.

Do not use these figures as a standalone fiberglass guarantee; YuanChen’s extracted data set does not contain a separate pure-fiberglass TDS. Product reference: fiberglass filter bags.

Membrane, finish and antistatic construction are different claims

ePTFE membrane

An ePTFE membrane is a thin porous layer laminated to a backing felt. It can promote surface filtration and dust release, but the backing, bond and sewing construction retain their own limits. “PTFE membrane on PPS” is not the same product as “full PTFE felt.”

Surface finish or impregnation

Singeing, calendering, oil/water-repellent treatment and PTFE impregnation change surface or handling properties. Each needs a purpose and a testable specification. A finish cannot automatically be assumed to produce membrane-level performance.

Antistatic media

Where combustible dust or electrostatic ignition is a concern, “antistatic” should be supported by the conductive structure, resistance or charge-decay requirement, relevant test method and grounding design. A folder label or black fibre appearance is not sufficient evidence. Combustible-dust risk also requires a system-level hazard assessment; media selection alone does not make the collector safe.

Construction details that often decide service life

Scrim: supports the felt and can determine dimensional and chemical behaviour.

Sewing thread and seam: must tolerate the same environment and mechanical load as the felt.

Cuff and bottom: must match the tubesheet, venturi and cage design.

Bag-to-cage fit: incorrect fit, burrs, corrosion or misalignment can cause abrasion and tears.

Membrane bond: requires compatible temperature, chemistry, flexing and cleaning conditions.

Gas distribution: local velocity and dust loading can create failures that an overall average hides.

Inspect and replace damaged filter cages when necessary. Depending on the problem, useful work may include used-bag failure analysis, dust testing, permeability or strength testing, chemical compatibility review, operating-trend analysis and a controlled compartment trial.

A trial needs predefined success criteria: duration, pressure-drop trend, emissions basis, visual inspection, cleaning settings and comparison conditions. Without them, “the bag worked” is not reusable engineering evidence.

## Send data, not just a material name

Use the [Filter Bag RFQ Checklist](https://www.yc-group.com/blog/filter-bag-rfq-checklist/) to organize process, dust, collector and construction information. Then send the completed form, bag/cage drawings and failure photos through the [contact page](https://www.yc-group.com/contact/). YuanChen can use those inputs to screen a proposed construction and identify missing measurements before quotation.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best material for industrial dust collector bags?

There is no universal best material. The appropriate fibre and construction depend on temperature, dew point, gas chemistry, dust, airflow, cleaning, mechanical fit, emissions and lifecycle cost.

### What is the difference between filter felt and a membrane?

The felt is the load-bearing fibrous substrate. A membrane is a thin surface-filtration layer bonded to a backing medium. The membrane does not replace the temperature and chemical limits of the underlying felt and construction.

### Why do new filter bags sometimes fail early?

Common causes include unrecognized condensation, process upsets, chemical attack, excessive cleaning, poor gas distribution, abrasive dust, damaged cages, incorrect dimensions and weak seams or bag-end construction.

### Can a supplier guarantee bag life?

A responsible commitment requires a defined operating envelope, complete construction and agreed acceptance conditions. Service life cannot be predicted credibly from fibre name alone.

Select industrial filter bag material using temperature, moisture, chemistry, dust, cleaning and construction—not fibre name alone.
